Beatbox Academy, meet Leith Academy

News 4 Jul 2019

A partnership project between Battersea Arts Centre Beatbox Academy, Edinburgh International Festival & the Traverse Theatre

Beatbox Academy brings together three world class organisations - Battersea Arts Centre Beatbox Academy, Edinburgh International Festival and Traverse Theatre - to create a unique performance opportunity for the young people of Edinburgh’s Leith Academy.

Young people will jam with BAC’s leading Beatbox Academy, Edinburgh singer/songwriter Josie O’Neill and other young musicians to learn to beatbox, improve their vocal techniques and make their own music using nothing but their mouths, before taking to the Traverse stage.

Pupils of Leith Academy will have the opportunity to connect with the following:

  • A week long in school residency in June 2019.
  • An intensive Beatbox Summer School in July/Aug 2019.
  • The opportunity to engage in curtain raiser performances of Frankenstein: How to Make a Monster at the Traverse Theatre, across the August 2019 Festival.

I WANT TO GET INVOLVED!

To be part of the Beatbox Academy Summer School, you must be a pupil at Leith Academy.

I WANT TO SEE THE SHOW!

Frankenstein: How to Make a Monster runs at the Traverse Theatre from Tue 6 to Sun 25 August. Performances (excluding 10pm) will kick off with a curtain raiser performance created by young people from Leith Academy.

I WANT TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT!

Hear more from pupils, teachers and Edinburgh International Festival on how beatbox became part of the Leith Academy timetable in June 2019.

It was amazing seeing pupils express themselves who don’t typically engage.
