Some news and updates from the Traverse

News 9 Jul 2020

The past week has seen hugely significant, and very welcome, announcements regarding the performing arts here in Scotland and UK-wide, with the Scottish and UK Governments both pledging relief and recovery funds that offer a lifeline to our creative industries.

The groundswell of advocacy across venues, audiences and artists has shown us not only the importance of the arts in our immediate communities, but has been reinforced at a societal level.

We are clearer than ever of our role in supporting creative talent, bringing bold stories to our audiences from new writing in every shape, size and platform, and that originates from anywhere or anyone.

This is why we need you, your friends, family and communities to join us at every step, to shape our work and our programme by being a part of it. Please sign-up to the Support Us mailing list to hear more about how you can support us and our work over the coming months using the button below. Many of us have been reflecting upon and reinforcing the importance of theatre in our lives, both as audience members and participants. Gary McNair (Locker Room Talk, Letters to Morrissey) shares with The Guardian how the Traverse challenged him as an audience member and made him as a writer.

'That, for me, is theatre: urgent, responsive, connecting with people beyond yourself. That, for me, is the Traverse.'

We'd love to hear what role the Traverse has played in your life. You can email us to share your story, or connect with us on Facebook and Twitter.

We know that finding the time and energy to write during lockdown isn't easy. That's why we're releasing a new Open Submissions Workshop each Wednesday to help you set aside time to develop your playwriting skills and pick up top tips from brilliant playwrights and theatre-makers.
