“Frighteningly ambitious, clever… thoroughly enjoyable, adventurous and full of joy” – isthismusic?
Catch them while you can: Dancing Miceappearances are rare. As they shyly emerge from behind their skirting boards, this special show at the Traverse will debut their 9th album, Book of Two Factors.
The band tell us that their new songs (as well as many favourites from previous albums) are in need of a live airing, and where better than in their home town, in front of a sophisticated, appreciative and non-violent audience.
Dancing Mice is a critically-acclaimed Edinburgh phenomenon, a cult success, well known to their devoted fans who crowd in to see them at the capital’s hip venues. Their accomplished music has been variously dubbed quirky, indie-prog, art rock. They are the largely-conscious inheritors of diverse musical heritages that rarely co-exist within one band. Dancing Mice is a unique chimera: sui generis, genuinely independent. When BBC 6Music's Stuart Maconie played some of the band's previous album, Acme, on his Freak Zone BBC show, he compared them to The Cardiacs. More recent commentators on the band's sounds and new songs have said, ‘Syd Barrett meets Talking Heads,’ and ‘Is that The Divine Comedy?’
As well as their sophisticated sound, and songs with meaty beats and lots of nifty musical ideas, Dancing Mice's sparkling lyrics have always been the object of special praise.
This is a not-to-be-missed concert. It will be musically thrilling and fun. It will leave you in-with-the-in-crowd smug that you went, and that your less-well-advised pals didn’t.
